A powerful and hypnotic read; HER, by Felicia Johnson

Felicia-Johnson-Author“Write hard and clear about what hurts”  ― Ernest Hemingway.  I didn’t have a clue what I would find when I sat down to read HER by Felicia Johnson. I did know going in, the topic was heavy, Borderline Personality Disorder, what I did not foresee, was the incredible journey I would be taken on with each turn of the page.

To be clear, the book is painful, raw and deals with a subject that breaks the heart. The main character Kristen, a teenage girl, is a victim of both physical and verbal abuse, who is plagued by depression and Borderline Personality Disorder. Hospitalized following a suicide attempt, and as she undergoes treatment for both her physical injuries, and her BPD, she meets other patients who through their own afflictions and torment, give her a clear idea that she doesn’t suffer from agonies inside her own head, alone.

Once I opened the book, I simply could not close it. Felicia has created a cast of characters that are unique and each enchanting in their own way. As the reader, we are pulling for each and everyone of them to make it through HER by Felicia Johnsontheir own personal journey and reach the light. However, it’s a book about real life and unfortunately, this isn’t always possible.

This is a must read for anyone who would like to delve deeper in the world that so many sweep under the carpet. Felicia, herself is a survivor, and this book was written with purpose. To end mental stigma’s, to have people talk about all forms of abuse, and to create an open dialogue so that everyone, survivors, friends and family members of those suffering can understand behavioral issues better. HER by Felicia Johnson is available online here.
